Nantucket

Us in downtown Nantucket Town. It's cobbly.

The lighthouse near the opening into the harbor. You're supposed to hit it with coins for good luck as you go by.

The beach we went to our first full day there.

The back deck of the house we stayed at. BBQs were had and many games and relaxing went on here.

Nantucket has been called "The new Vineyard". It's not hard to see why, since glancing through the real estate catalogue shows no house far under $1,000,000, and most of them are secluded multi-bedroom houses with cedar shingles and white trim tucked away up dirt roads or near beaches. It's a beautiful island because it's basically one big home-owner's association, so everyone uses the same theme, and there's no crowding or ugly commercialization on the island. It's just quiet roads, often dirt or sand instead of asphalt, and 1 or two towns, with the rest being extremely well kept and secluded houses. We took the bus from Boston down to Hyannis, where the Kennedy compound is, then took a ferry to Nantucket town, where my friend picked us up. We arrived at his family's house, got our own room, which had a bed almost more comfortable than our own! Dinner that night was BBQ hamburgers and we played games late into the night.

On Saturday we explored the town, which is filled with lots of little quaint shops built on cobblestone roads. Then our friend drove us around the island so we could see all of Nantucket. The island is beautiful and very pristine. Lots of unique trees and shrubbery with beautiful sandy beaches. Oh, and amazing multi-million dollar homes. A few other friends arrived slowly over the weekend. We pretty much spent the whole weekend playing games, eating, and relaxing. We went out for yummy fish and chip lunch on Sunday followed by the best ice cream at a well known place called the Juice Bar. We spent Sunday afternoon on the beach, which was almost 10 degrees cooler than inland, foggy, and windy. Needless to say, not much sunbathing. Some of the crazy boys jumped into the water (Brrrrr!). And Chad dug himself a man sized hole and we buried him up to his neck (picture to come later). And another BBQ out on the deck followed by a night of board games. Chad and I are lucky to have found friends that like to play board games as much as we do.

We left on Monday afternoon and we back in Boston by 5pm. It was a great relaxing weekend.
Soon we'll have pictures from our weekend coming up at the Cape with Gammy & Papa!
