The 4th of July

A couple of weekends ago we celebrated our fourth 4th here in Boston! We have never gone down to see the big show by the Boston pops and the fireworks in person and this year was no exception. It was a hot and muggy fourth and we celebrated it by having a wonderful brunch with out great friends the Ungs followed by games in which Mayers did not win : ( However, in the afternoon we ended up at a backyard grilling party hosted by a temporary bachelor in our church whose wife and daughters are in korea for the summer. It was a really fun dinner but the stickiness of the air made the eventual retreat inside to watch the fireworks on tv incredibly welcome. The 5th saw us heading down to Groton and Ledyard to see our friends the Dziaduls and the Webers. We spent the day at the beach with the kids and playing games at home before having some delicious seafood paella made by Mrs Weber. We spent the night at the Dziaduls before heading out on the

6th to Nickerson State Park for some camping. Brewster is located on the inner Cape and as such has some of the most dramatic tides in New England. Whitney and I went to Breakwater Beach for the day arriving a couple hours before high tide. The water was amazing, heated by a brutal sun, and it was incredibly refreshing to be able to simply wade into the cool water over a sandy bottom. The only problem was the complete lack of shade on the beach and the lack of clouds in the sky. We were pretty envious of some of the beach shelters that others brought with them. Even applying sunscreen 4 times throughout the day, you would simply sweat it off in the heat or during the frequent dips to escape the land furnace. We still had a great time at the beach until the tide began to recede quickly and dramatically. Within two hours of hightide, the water was at knee level for several hundred yards out, and bare sand extended for a quarter mile an hour later.

After the beach we headed into the state park to check in and have some dinner. Sam had given us some delicious frozen homemade patties so we had burgers and then got some ice cream next door after going for an afternoon drive through the small towns of the middle Cape. We don't have a lantern and headed to bed early since we didn't decide to build a campfire as it was still 80 even after dark. Consequently the tent was stifling and we were two sweaty bundles on our air mattress most of the night. Waking early, sunburnt, we decided to forego the plan to go the beach again and instead packed and headed home, returning by midmorning. This turned out to be lucky, as others i talked to took up to six hours to drive the less than 100 miles back to Boston!

I write this on the flight back from Colorado which will be detailed shortly!
